Modern sights in Tarragona
The monument of amazing national competitions “Castells” take place in ancient part of Tarragona. What is it? In the literal translation “Castells” mean “towers”. A castle or tower or pyramid built from people. Such an original entertainment appeared more than two hundred years ago.
Castells are conducted almost every weekend in different cities and villages of Catalonia. That’s why everyone can see this unique tradition. Well, those, who could not, can see this sculptural composition. The author of this interesting monument is a modern Catalan sculptor Francesc Angles, which is characterized by creating images of various human groups in realistic scenes. Specifically, this monument was erected in Tarragona in 1999 and depicts a “pyramid”, consisting of 219 human figures that make up the structure quatre de vuit (ie a tower consisted of eight levels with 4 people in each). On the top of the tower there is a waving child. Near the tower the sculptor depicted other traditional participants of the action: the head of the group that monitors the process of building the tower, as well as musicians.
The interesting fact is that you can recognize the images of specific personalities among the figures: famous Catalans, including artists Joan Miró and Pablo Picasso, cellist Pau Casals and leader of the Olympic Movement, Juan Antonio Samaranch. The sculptor depicted himself in one of the figures. The height of the composition is 11 meters and it weighs 12 tons.
The oldest Tarragona (its history lasts for more than 2000 years) is a surprisingly warm and hospitable city. But very often you can see graffiti on the walls. It’s a very interesting way, which the authorities have decided to use to control all the actions of street artists.
The first building, which was painted in such a way in 1995 by Carles Arola, is located in the center of the fortress. Nowadays there are dozens of houses painted by unknown authors in Tarragona.http://www.aztourstravel.com/modern-sights-in-tarragona/EuropeSpain
