Vacations at Madagascar:

Scientists believe that the island of Madagascar, located in the western Indian Ocean, separated from Africa around 165 million years ago. That is why its ecosystem is so different from what we can see on the continents. Perhaps similar ecosystems might be found only in Australia and New Zealand .

Today Madagascar is considered to be the island (however the locals call it small mainland), the 4th largest in the world by its area. Also, for the island it has quite a big population – more than 18 million people. There exist here a variety of plants and animals, and 80% of them you cannot find in any other places in the world.

The capital of Madagascar is Antananarivo. It was founded in XVII century, when Madagascar was a kingdom. There were no stone buildings in Madagascar that time, except the Royal Palace ensemble. However, in the end of XIX century, the country was occupied by French. During that time it was built a University and many other buildings. Today there is an international airport in the capital, which is linked with other provinces by good roads. There is also a network of railways, although it is less developed.

The palaces of the Imerina kings, the state that existed on the island before the French colonization, still remain the main attraction of the capital, although there is also recently rebuilt Ruva palace (it was burnt to the ground in 1995) or a royal tomb.

There is also an interesting zoo Tsimbazaza, which was founded in the XX century. It is rather small and an hour would be enough to visit it. It has not only the lemurs, birds and reptiles, it’s most interesting part is a museum, which exhibits are truly unique. Only there you can find the skeletons of giant lemurs or the skeletons of giant birds Aepyornis, described in the famous Arabian tales “One Thousand and One Nights” under the name of Roc Birds.

According to researches, today these birds are extinct, but the Arabs in the old days often visited Al-Comore island, so they called Madagascar, and they might have met Aepyornis there. These birds could reach a height of 3 meters and weigh about half a ton. Their eggs were 160 times bigger than chicken’s.
